Introduction by Randal Wallace of our special series “MAYOR HIRSCH”
In this episode we have a brief introduction by our Host Randal Wallace on Mayor Robert J. Hirsch and the circumstances that led to this special series on his life and career. Bob Hirsch was the Mayor of Myrtle Beach S.C. from 1973 to 1977, and then later served as a Myrtle Beach City Councilman from 1990 to 1994. He would also serve as a member of South Carolina Governor James Edward’s staff running the Energy programs for the State and he has been a driving force as the Chairman, Chairman Emeritus, and a Board Member for nearly 50 years of the South Carolina Hall of Fame.
Mayor Hirsch recently celebrated his 100th Birthday on August 30, 2023. He was honored at a Myrtle Beach City Council Meeting by our current Mayor, Brenda Bethune, and the current City Council at that time. Mayor Hirsch also spoke as the Keynote Speaker at the Unveiling ceremony of the Myrtle Beach World War 2 Memorial, at Warbird Park, at the Market Commons entryway on what was once the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. It was while recording that event for this podcast that we thought it would be interesting to take a look back at the life of this amazing man, who served as our city’s Mayor.
In many ways, our Host Randal Wallace, has a special kinship with Mayor Hirsch, because Wallace is now the Chairman of the South Carolina Hall of Fame, and also once served on the Myrtle Beach City Council, following in the footsteps of the former Mayor. Our podcast, from its beginning, has focused on the leadership lessons that we can learn from the generation of Americans who fought the Second World War, and then came home to build the American Century. There is no better example of those leadership qualities, of integrity, service, boldness, humbleness, and patriotism than the example we have right here in our hometown of Myrtle Beach, in the person of our former Mayor, Robert J. Hirsch.
We hope you will join us for our 6 – part Documentary Podcast, with one special edition episode too, that will chronicle the life and service of Robert J. Hirsch, from the start of World War 2 at Pearl Harbor, to his time flying paratroopers and supplies over enemy territory, from France, to Holland, to Belgium , and over the Rhine River, to his long and happy marriage and happy family life raising 10 children, to his days as our Mayor, and as a staff member for our Governor, and onto the celebrations of his long life here in Myrtle Beach today.
This is an honor for our podcast to present this story to you, and we hope you will tune in over the next few days.
